Avalanche warning for region Lofoten og Vesterålen Saturday 20.05.2023

Danger level 1 - Low avalanche danger

Published:
It’s mainly stable snow, but it is possible to trigger small avlanches where the snow is very wet. Keep a safe distance to cornices and glide cracks.

Avalanche problems

Wet snow (loose snow avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on a few steep slopes. Avalanches are relatively harmless to people, but can knock you off balance. Can be dangerous close to terrain traps. (size 1)

Loose snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Friday 19. May 2023

Det gamle snødekket er smelteomdannet. Torsdag formiddag var det skare mange steder etter at kaldere vær hadde ført til gjenfrysning. Høyt til fjells kom det noe nysnø 17. mai.
Snøgrensen varierer mye innad i regionen. På kysten ut mot storhavet er fjellene i stor grad snøfrie, mens det øst på Hinnøya og i Vågan fortsatt er skiføre nærmere veien.

Mountain weather

Friday 19. May 2023

10 mm precipitation, up to 20 mm in the most exposed areas. Precipitation as rain. Strong breeze from southwest. 2 °C to 7 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Saturday 20. May 2023

12 mm precipitation, up to 25 mm in the most exposed areas. Precipitation as rain. Moderate gale from southwest. 2 °C to 7 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment

Det er generelt stabile forhold. Enkelte steder kan det være mulig å løse ut små våte løssnøskred, særlig i bratte fjellsider der det blir mye regn. Skavlbrudd og glideskred kan forekomme.
